1982 – acrylic on wood, painted iron
A small cube-shaped room on the villa’s top floor has been transformed into a playful composition of wooden signs and shapes that have been cut out, painted, and then arranged on the wall like a collage. A marionette, complete with strings, and the exaggreated furnishings of a puppet theater seem to bob merrily along the wall. The work is inspired by Italo Calvino’s book, The Baron in the Trees, from which a brief quotation appears on a painted board hung in the room. In 1989, after years of not working In the space, Spoldi worked Introduced a sculptural element into the room. Painted red and black and placed on its side, the sculpture resembles an old-fashioned bicycle, creates an almost transparent filter through which the visitor can observe the puppet show.
