Giuseppe Chiari

Giuseppe Chiari (Firenze, 1926 – Firenze, 2007)

In 1990, Giuseppe Chiari, a Florentine artist associated with the Fluxus movement, arrived with his assistant TommasoTozzi to install his Collage di un Musicista (Collage of a Musician) in a room on the first floor of the fattoria. The autobiographical assemblage — composed of photocopied texts, stamped envelopes, frames containing drawings, photographs, and notes — only required a few days of work, but his commitment to the Collage did not end there. In the following years, the artist intervened on the materials by making substitutions, movements, and revisions to document a true work-in-progress reflection on his art.

“The material wants to be and is precarious. Obviously, the work must be received in its total entirety. The character of the parts does not give the character of the whole. It is an artist’s gesture. And as such, it will be judged… […] The work is poor. The work is objective. The subjective lies in the domino arrangement. In the caprice unconsciously felt by the author in unfolding these sheets on the wall as a path.” Translated from Giuseppe Chiari in Gori Collection.
