Andrea M.N Mati (Pistoia, 1960 – )

The landscape designer and artist Andrea M. N. Mati has engaged in a longstanding dialogue with Giuliano Gori on all aspects of nature, including writings in prose and poetry about nature. After the devastating windstorm that struck the park on March 5, 2015, their conversation shifted towards a reparative act that could replace the 550 historic trees lost in a single night. This led to the creation of the artwork Focus, composed of 30 tall cypress trees, symbolizing the crucial role that nature plays in environmental art at Celle.

Mati explained, “With Giuliano Gori, ourgenius loci, we imagined that, ideally, the thirty cypresses could represent thirty poets and artists.” Arranged in four rows, these cypresses converge toward a “focal point” from which Sandro Veronesi’s Poets’ Greenhouseproject emerged.

Mati further stated, “In order to give my work its voice, to guide it towards its Focus, I chose the cypress trees which, with their elongated forms pointing to the sky, have always been invested with spiritual meanings. In the field of philosophy, I am very interested inPhysis, as it was conceived by the Ancient Greek thinkers, referring to primitive nature, to the origin, to the whole in the process of becoming; I imagined visual art, literature, music, and architecture in dialogue with nature the creator, bringing to light those intuitions that guide us to clarifying the meaning of our existence.” Andrea M.
